at the end of the day, it comes down to Studebaker vs Nash, but those  
gutta-percha diaphragms on the Cheneys don't age well, combined with  
the stair-step sound passages, makes 'em pretty rough for most folks.   
don't get me wrong, i love 'em - but for comic relief (read the ads!)  
and visual appeal rather than wholesome aural enjoyment.  pathes  
aren't all ugly, and mostly sound pretty great.

the late great Bob Waltrip spent many hours trying to improve the  
Cheney sound, including the styrofoam approach, and well, lets just  
say he tried.

best part is the claim how with age the wood of the "tone chamber"  
would age to mellow the tone, not unlike the finest stradevarii...
