Wow. Somebody finally answered my question about the Columbia  140 portable!  
I'm glad to see that you have actually seen another of  these.  The sound is 
really pretty good, considering that it is a  pre-viva-tonal machine.  The 
sound travels through the wooden lid with an  oddly suspended tonearm and the 
louvers allow for a volume control.  Now  when have you seen a pre-electric 
portable with a volume control?
I like it--but don't play it much.  After all--it's a  portable!
