No, that's not right. eBay started in 1995, and Yahoo attempted to compete with them on auctions starting in 1998, followed by Amazon in 1999. eBay was so well established by then that neither Yahoo's nor Amazon's auctions got much traffic, and they both gave up. I signed up as a seller with eBay in 1996, less than a year after they opened for business.
