If I am not mistaken, the crapophone industry in India was a domestic industry for awhile. There are many areas of India where electricity was not common, and in fact India produced 78s into the 1960s. I am guessing that crapophones came into existence as a practical item for playing records because of the lack of electricity to power electric phonographs. Just my theory, of course.
